PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard is able to construct seine or trawl nets for commercial fishing. They are able to cut netting to produce net panels and are able to assemble the panels to create the net. The person credited with this unit standard will also be able to repair various types of damage that affect the netting material used for fish or prawn trawl nets.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Planning the construction of a net.
  • Cutting netting to produce net panels.
  • Assembling net panels, lines and wires.
  • Preparing netting material for repair.
  • Mending holes and tears using twine.
  • Mending large scale damage using netting material. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is to be assessed using a plan for the construction of a seine net or a trawl net for a commercial fishing boat.

    Plan the construction of a net. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction plan is developed according to the overall net plan requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The construction plan specifies the materials required in terms of their quantities and qualities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The construction plan includes a cutting plan for the netting panels. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Cut netting to produce net panels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cuts made are consistent with the cutting plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Panels produced are consistent with the net plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The amount of wastage is within acceptable levels. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assemble net panels, lines and wires. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The net panels, lines, and wires are assembled in accordance with the net plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The netting is hung on the selvage lines and wires in accordance with the net plan.

    Work is conducted in accordance with safe working practices.

    Prepare netting material for repair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The efficient and safe arranging and organising of the netting material and repair tools is explained and demonstrated with fishing sector specific examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Netting material includes but is not limited to knotted and knotless netting.
  • Tools may include but not limited to netting needles (bone, flat), knives, scissors, measuring devices (marked rod, mesh gauge, ruler), stands, tensioning devices.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identifying the material required for the repair operation is explained and demonstrated with fishing sector specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Removal of damaged netting using net work tool is explained and demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Disposing of damaged netting is dealt with in such a way as to minimise environmental impact in accordance with maritime legislation and enterprise procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Preparation of retained netting to accept replacement is explained and demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation includes but is not limited to cleaning off of knots, ascertaining starting and end points.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Shaping of replacement netting with net repair tools is explained and demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Shaping includes but not limited to all points or all bars or a combination to form tapers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Replacement netting is strengthened in accordance with the gear plan or accepted industry practices before being added to the net. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Strengthening includes but is not limited to selvedge, bordering with stronger netting, double twine, gathering meshes, strengthening ropes.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Mend holes and tears using twine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Starting points are identified and twine is secured to the netting according to accepted practices in the industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Securing may be by double sheet bend or sheet bend with overhand knot.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Twine is used to tie knots that make meshes to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Knots include but not limited to double sheet bend, sheet bend tied horizontally and vertically, side knot, net maker's knot, two half hitches, rolling hitch or hanging knots, baiting knots, joining (fisherman's) knot, sewn with meshes horizontal or meshes vertical.

    Twine is secured at the end of the repair according to supervisor's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Mend large scale damage using netting material.

    Starting points are identified and twine is secured to the netting in accordance with accepted practices in the industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Existing and replacement material is joined using twine and knots to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Joining includes but not limited to mesh to mesh, point to point, taper to taper, gathering meshes together.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Existing and replacement material is joined using twine and lacing to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lacing involves but is not limited to temporary mending, two panels together, strengthening ropes.
