The person credited with this unit standard will be able to use, maintain navigational charts and publications and explain the broad principles and use of conventional magnetic and gyro compasses. They will also be able to plan and conduct a safe coastal passage.

The position of the vessel is determined using Dead Reckoning taking into account wind, tides, current and estimated speed. |
