PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to Plan a fishing trip and conduct a daily fishing activity. They will also be able to review daily fishing activities and review the fishing trip.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the vessel and crew for sea.
  • Planning a fishing trip.
  • Conducting daily fishing activity.
  • Reviewing daily fishing activity.
  • Reviewing fishing trip.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

    Prepare the vessel and crew for sea. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vessel's readiness is determined against specific criteria for the sector of the industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Criteria for vessel readiness may include but is not limited to fuel requirements, food and water requirements, safety equipment requirements and the seaworthiness of the vessel.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Staff readiness is determining against specific criteria for the sector of the industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Staff readiness pertains to licensing requirements and level of competence.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required fishing equipment is determined according to the planned fishing activity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Required fishing equipment may include but are not limited to the net, trawl winch, trawl doors, warps and fish finding technology.

    The required fishing equipment is checked for availability and readiness against specific industry norms and equipment specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Identified weather information is obtained from recognised internal and external sources. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Weather information may include but are not limited to Synoptic charts, weather fax, marine notices and navigational warnings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Weather information is interpreted according to requirements for the planned trip. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The commercial purpose of the fishing trip is explained with sector specific examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The commercial purpose will include the income to the vessel relating to the fish being sourced for the market versus the cost of operating the vessel.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The market information requirement(s) are identified and obtained from authorised internal and external sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Identified fish resource information with associated navigational and fishing hazards is utilized to determine the resource availability and locality. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Fish resource information may include but is not limited to company records, past catch profiles, information from other fisherman and current conditions.
  • Navigational and other hazards may include but are not limited to other shipping activity, changing weather patterns, changing sea conditions, wrecks, rough fishing grounds, international telephone cables and designated 'no go' fishing areas.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Primary target area and alternatives for the fishing trip are identified based on the information obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    A plan for the fishing trip is prepared taking into account all relevant information obtained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for using a particular fishing ground are explained with relevance to the targeted species. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reasons may include but are not limited to the efficiency of catching the targeted species, the reduction of steaming time and the minimization of the by-catch.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identified navigational and other hazards to the fishing activity are dealt with in order to minimise their impact. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Identified navigational and other hazards may include but are not limited to other shipping activity, changing weather patterns, changing sea conditions, wrecks, rough fishing grounds, international telephone cables and designated 'no go' fishing areas.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The vessel and fishing equipment is prepared for use at sea for planned fishing activities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may include but not limited to the setting of the net.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fish hunting activities are carried out using the resources available in accordance with specific industry norms and equipment specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources may include but are not limited to personal interpretation of weather and sea conditions, operation and interpretation of fish hunting technology and feedback from other fishing vessels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fishing catching activities are performed in the most efficient and cost effective manner for the targeted species utilizing all pertinent information and equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fish catching activities may include but are not limited related weather and sea conditions, operation and interpretation of fish catching technology, duration of individual fishing activity, potential volume of fish caught and monitoring of engine load.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Individual fishing activity is assessed in order to make further fishing activity decisions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Assessment may include but is not limited to type, volume and mix of fish caught, condition of trawl gear, engine performance and related weather and sea conditions.

    Review daily fishing activity.

    The method for reviewing the daily fishing activity per catch is explained with organisational and industry specific examples.

    A daily fishing activity is reviewed against the planned fishing activity in order to determine level of success. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reviewing may include but is not limited to type, volume and mix of fish caught, engine performance and related weather and sea conditions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Daily checks are carried out on the fishing gear according to organisational and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information gathering, record keeping and reporting activities pertaining to the fishing operation are carried out according to organisational and legal requirements.

    The method of reviewing the success of the fishing trip is explained with organisational and industry specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All aspects of the fishing trip are evaluated in terms of organisational, legislated and industry requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    All aspects may include but are not limited to commercial value of fish caught, costs associated with fuel, salaries victuals, daily cost of vessel, wear and tear on fishing equipment, performance of fishing equipment, weather and sea conditions, legislated fish resource allocation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The fishing trip results are interpreted against the plan in order to highlight deviations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Remedial action is proposed to address the deviations from the plan.
