PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to understand and explain the work principles and constructional details of marine diesel engines with auxiliary equipment. They will also be able understand, explain the operation and maintenance of diesel engines, this will also enable them top demonstrate, indicate the properties of fuel and lubricating oils used in diesel engines and explain the various machinery components that are manufactured and the effects of the various physical properties of the materials that are used.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the working principles and constructional details of marine diesel engines.

    The impact of the size of the diesel engine is explained in terms of the performance of the vessel.

    How the diesel engines are maintained is explained in terms of manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures.

    Explain the properties of fuel and lubricating oils used in marine diesel engines.

    Diesel fuel and lubricating oils may include but are not limited to the diesel oil, heavy fuel oil test analysis information of:
  • Viscosity, alkalinity, Ph, sulphur content, water content, and aluminium content.

    The properties of fuel used in diesel engines are explained in terms of international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The properties of lubricating oils used in diesel engines is known and explained in terms of international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of contaminated or poor qualify fuel oil on the machinery is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the manufacture of various machinery components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The machinery components may include but are not limited to:
  • Connecting rods, crankshafts, engine bedplates, cylinder heads, liners, pistons, piston rings, gear wheels, and inlet and exhaust valves and coolers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    How various machinery components are manufactured is explained in terms of manufacturing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of the various treatments on the physical properties of the materials are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Treatments may include but are not limited to annealing, normalizing, surface hardening and tempering.
