PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Purpose:

Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to coach the game of football to players with a good understanding of the sport. In addition, the individuals will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the game of football, coaching the technical and strategic principles of the sport and will be able to prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions.

Individuals will be able to demonstrate the skills and competencies required to coach intermediate to advanced players of the game and in so doing, will be able to design, implement and evaluate the process and outcome of long term coaching performance on advanced players Learners qualifying against this unit standard may apply coaching skills in the capacity of performance level coaches, senior club and school coaches or Provincial coaches.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Apply the rules governing the game of football.
  • Plan a series of football coaching sessions.
  • Coach the game of football to intermediate and advanced players of the game.

    The rules of the game are utilised in tactical and technical coaching of the game.

    The prevention of injuries of players participating in the game of football is enhanced through the correct application of the rules of the game.

    Individual and team performance and conduct is analysed and addressed in terms of adherence to the rules of the game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rules of the game are utilised in strategy planning for the game. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan a series of football coaching sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tactical and technical objectives of the game of football are identified as they apply to the needs of individuals and the team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Performance analysis is conducted so as to determine tactical and technical strengths and weaknesses of opposition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coaching requirements are identified for individual players as well as the team.

  • Functional role analysis, movement skills, attack and defence, handling skills, passing skills, continuity and recovery, conditioning for fitness and endurance, safety requirements, game strategy and tactics.

    A coaching plan is drafted to incorporate principles of personal growth and development for individuals.

    Resources requirements are planned for football practice sessions.

    Safety requirements are utilised in the planning of practice sessions to support principles of safety of players and the team.

  • Organising of people, equipment and space to ensure safety during a session, warming up and cooling down, cardiovascular training, stretching exercises to help improve flexibility, suppleness and conditioning so as to prevent injury.

    Available systems of coaching are used to develop individual and team skills in the game.

  • Group formations, testing of players, player and games analysis, team-building, incorporation of different sport science specialisations within the context of coaching, micro, meso and macro cycles.

    Different coaching methods are utilised for the reinforcement of the technical skills of the game as it applies to individuals, units and the team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coaching methods are used to support the conditioning of intermediate and advanced participants in the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For conditioning includes but is not limited to:
  • Techniques aimed at the correction and/or affirmation of tactical and technical skills, progression toward advanced performance, fitness, cardio respiratory endurance, agility, speed, handling and recovering skills, attack and defence, individual, units and team skills, movement analysis and rectification, match preparation and mental preparation.

    Individual progress and performance is analysed and coaching sessions adjusted to coach for the correction and reinforcement of technical and tactical skills.

  • Personal objectives, club and team objectives and performance, game strategies in competition, individual adapting to coaching cycles and interventions, development of talent and advanced level skills.

    Coaching performance as it applies to the use of sport science support roles is evaluated.

    Coaching records are concluded to record coaching sessions and modifications to coaching plans.

    A logbook is kept to record conducted coaching sessions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The use and application of sport science and knowledge of biomechanics, nutrition and basic anatomy, exercise physiology, sports injuries, injury prevention whether applied or referred requires and understanding of and use of sport science and technology.

    The planning and conducting of coaching sessions will require the addressing of situations associated with the progression of activities and skills of the individual both in terms of positional and team performance.
