PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge about synchronized swimming to plan, implement and evaluate a practice session. They will be able to apply coaching techniques by assessing learner swimming competence and introduce synchronized swimming skills to beginners.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and extent of the sport of synchronized swimming.
  • Creating a safe environment for synchronized swimming.
  • Implementing a synchronized swimming practice session for beginners.
  • Evaluating the coaching process.

    The historical development of this discipline is explained in relation to the South African context.

    Organisational structures responsible for synchronized swimming are described in the South African context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Organisational structures include, but are not limited to; Club, provincial, national, continental and international.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles and responsibilities of the club, provincial and national synchronized swimming structures are explained according to their constitutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The rules of synchronized swimming are explained in accordance with Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).

    The progressive grade scheme for synchronized swimming skills development plan.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Facilities and environment are checked for hazards before practice sessions and competitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is evaluated in terms of its suitability and protection and safety of the synchronized swimmers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety of juniors is evaluated in terms of fluid intake and protection from the elements.

    Elements include, but are not limited to; Heat, sun, cold.

    Implement a synchronized practice session for beginners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rules of synchronized swimming are applied according to FINA rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A synchronized swimming practice session for beginners is planned in terms of the swimmers' characteristics and sporting needs according to Swimming SA's age specific skills development plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Characteristics include, but are not limited to; Psychological, physical and sociological.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Orientation to synchronized swimming through stories and games (play-based). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic synchronized swimming skills and techniques are taught through observation and demonstration using available resources according to the planned practice session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Planned training is adapted in relation to the developmental stages of beginners being coached. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Training adaptations include, but are not limited to; Skills, sequence and routines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A logbook on practice sessions is compiled to critically reflect on the effectiveness of coaching. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual assessment reports are completed to show progression within synchronized swimming grade award scheme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Feedback is provided to synchronized swimmers in terms of skills and performance through badge awards scheme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Practice session plans are revised in relation to the own observations and feedback. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
