PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners qualifying against this unit standard will be able to coach the game of rugby to players with a good understanding of the sport. In addition, the learner will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the game of rugby, coaching the technical and strategic principles of the sport.

The leaner will be able to demonstrate the skills and competencies required to coach intermediate to advanced players in the skills of the sport and prepare teams for 15 man and sevens rugby. Learners qualifying against this unit standard may apply coaching skills in a school, community club or organisation in the capacity of performance level coaches, senior club and school coaches or Provincial Coaches.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Apply the laws governing the game of rugby.
  • Plan and implement rugby coaching sessions.
  • Apply coaching techniques for technical and tactical skills development for the game of rugby.
  • Apply rugby strategy and record keeping skills.
  • Reflect on coaching performance.

    Records of games are used to interpret the laws of the game as it applies to a range of game situations.

    The laws of the game is applied in tactical and technical coaching of the game.

    Laws of the game are applied in support of individual and team safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Individual and team performance and conduct are analysed and addressed within the context of adherence to the rules of the game.

    Plan and implement rugby coaching sessions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tactical and technical objectives of the game are determined as they apply to positional play and performance analysis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Performance analysis is conducted to determine tactical and technical strengths and weaknesses of opposition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coaching requirements for a rugby season are identified as it applies to individual players as well as the team. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to:
  • Identities of rugby and functional role analysis, tackling skills, handling skills, running and kicking skills and continuity, conditioning for fitness, strength and endurance, handling of the ball, positional play and performance.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A seasonal coaching plan is drafted which incorporates practice sessions, objectives and planned activities based on periodisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Resources requirements are planned for rugby practice sessions.

    Resources planning includes but is not limited to; Venues, equipment, facilities, administration.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Risk management is done for the planning of practice sessions through the identification of safety principles and requirements relating to individual players and the team.

    Safety includes but is not limited to:
  • Ttransfer of skills and techniques, the correction and application of techniques in contact situations, conditioning sessions player conduct, prohibiting of dangerous play.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different coaching techniques are used for the reinforcement of tactical and technical skills of the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Goal setting is utilised as a technique in individual and team coaching and preparation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tactical and technical skills of the game are coached as it applies to identities of rugby and the functional role of positions of the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Functioning role includes but is not limited to; Mini-units - rucks, maul, units-forwards and backs and team skills-attacking, defence, tactics.

    Mental conditioning techniques are utilised in the coaching of tactical and technical skills.

    Principles of biomechanics and nutrition are used in support of physical conditioning of players.

    The principles of visual preparation are utilised to improve performance of players.

    Feedback techniques are used as it applies to individual and team motivation.

    The requirements for tactical play for the different positions in the team are identified as it applies to the agreed game strategies for the team.

    Analysis of individual and team strengths and weaknesses as well as those of the opposition are used to determine game strategy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Individual and team objectives relating to strategy are incorporated in coaching of the game.

    Selection techniques are applied in support of tactical decisions and game strategies.

    Player and club administration are conducted to ensure currency and accuracy of information and progress tracking.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The planning and conducting of coaching sessions at provincial level will require the addressing of situations associated with the progression of activities and skills of the individual both in terms of positional and team performance.

    Effective communication is supported in the planning and conducting of coaching sessions in the use of written and verbal communication skills on club level. In addition written communication skills are supported via the administrative requirements associated with provincial level coaching.

    The practices associated with the sport as well as the impact of the sport on an individual and group basis supports and understanding of the world as a set of interrelated systems. The consideration of personal objectives, coaching requirements as well as the individual performance of judokas enhances the requirement to understand the world as a set of interrelated systems.
