PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to operate as a coach in support of the coaching of the technical and tactical skills of competitive triathlon to individuals who already mastered the fundamental principles of the sport in order to encourage new entrance to triathlon as a competitive sport.

In achieving this unit standard, the competent individuals will display the competency and the skills required to coach participants the essential skills of the sport and prepare the individual or team for competitive triathlon on a junior level. The qualifying learner may work in a school, community club or organisation, coaching competitive triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon at beginner to intermediate level.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Coach the laws governing triathlon.
  • Identify safety requirements for competitive triathlon.
  • Plan and implement practice sessions.
  • Coach the skills and conditioning of triathlon.
  • Review coaching sessions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • The unit standard - Conduct Coaching To Beginners In Triathlon.

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be competent in swimming, running and cycling and in possession of a first aid certificate so as to handle any emergency incidents in the coaching of individuals for competitive triathlon.

    Coach the laws governing triathlon.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of triathlon as a competitive discipline is provided to show understanding of the evolution of triathlon as a sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condensed history of triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon as competitive sports, the development of the sport, international practices of the sport, competition disciplines and distances, operational structures for the sport in South Africa-federation, SASCOC, SRSA.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws relating to specific triathlon disciplines are described as it applies to the sport and the disciplines making up the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Professional conduct and protocol associated with competitive triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon as well as the disciplines making up the sport.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of the coach and other officials as adjudicators of the laws governing competitive triathlon is described as it applies to fair play and ethical behaviour. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify safety requirements for competitive triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of the coach is explained in the context of the safety athletes being coached for competitive triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The risks involved with the sport of triathlon are identified and explained as they affect the disciplines making up the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific safety requirements applicable to the sport and the arrangements of competitive events are explained for each of the related disciplines of the sport. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Plan and implement practice sessions.

    A coaching plan and sessions are planned as it applies to a sport season. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal and/or team objectives for competitive athletes are identified to ensure applicable practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of a coaching programme for the disciplines of triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of personal growth and development are included in the coaching/practice programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety requirements are identified and utilised in the coaching of the different disciplines of the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A range of practice sessions are developed to enable effective conditioning and technical skills transfer associated with specific disciplines and competitive distances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Drills for conditioning, inclusion of techniques and tactics for transition, speed fitness and strength conditioning.

    Coach the skills and conditioning of triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of physical conditioning for competitive participation in the sport of triathlon are explained and utlised in practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Warming up, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility as applicable to propulsion and triathlon disciplines and transition between disciplines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different coaching methods are used to meet the needs of the athlete being coached for competitive triathlon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The technical skills of the disciplines of the sport are taught in scheduled practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Swimming, running, cycling and transition between the disciplines.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Review coaching sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Individual progress is evaluated and practice sessions adjusted to address personal development as per personal and/or team objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Records are concluded to record modifications of coaching sessions to the coaching plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Administrative requirements is concluded according to operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Registration, progress tracking, logbook for the recording of conducted coaching sessions and adjustment to the seasonal coaching plan.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
