PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to coach beginner hockey players. Furthermore, the learner will be able to explain the basic components of junior hockey, showing understanding of the basic principles of the sport.

The qualifying learner is likely to work with modified games to provide beginners with a fundamental understanding of the game of hockey.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:

Creating a safe playing environment for modified hockey.

Teaching the rules and principles of fair play for modified hockey.

Implementing a hockey practice session at junior level.

Create a safe playing environment for modified hockey.

Facilities and environment are checked for hazards before practice sessions and during the hockey game.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Equipment is evaluated in terms of its suitability for protection and safety of the player.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Safety of juniors is evaluated in terms of fluid intake and protection from the elements.

Heat, sun, cold.

Blood related injuries are managed in accordance with prescribed precautions and practice.

Player preparation is facilitated in relation to physical preparation and game activities.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

A hockey practice session for juniors is planned taking into account children's characteristics and sporting needs according to South African Hockey Association's age specific skills development plan.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Characteristics include, but are not limited to:

Psychological, physical and sociological.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Basic hockey skills and techniques are taught through observation and demonstration using available resources according to the planned practice session.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Planned training is adapted in relation to the developmental stages of juniors being coached.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Training adaptations include, but are not limited to:

Technical, tactical and social.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

A logbook on practice sessions and modified games is compiled to critically reflect on the effectiveness of coaching.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

A basic data base of players is maintained to provide biographical information and player growth.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.

Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information about junior participants characteristics and sporting needs in order to develop age specific hockey practice sessions.

Communicate effectively using appropriate modes of oral and/or written persuasion in dealing with all internal and external role-players to implement a hockey training plan for juniors.
