PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, individuals will display the competency required to operate as an assistant coach in order to coach the fundamental principles and skills of the game to individuals participating in the sport on beginner to elementary level. Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to apply coaching skills as a school, community, sport club or organization on a regional level. Individuals will have a good understanding of the rules of the game and will be able to coach the technical skills of the game of netball in a safe and structured manner according to coaching and practice plans.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Explain the rules governing the game of netball.
  • Plan practice sessions for netball coaching.
  • Conduct netball coaching activities.
  • Reflect on performance as a coach.

    Explain the rules governing the game of netball.

    The importance of understanding the rules applicable to netball is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws of netball are explained to ensure fair play and understanding of the principles of the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laws include but are not limited to:
  • Correct terminology, etiquette on the court, laws pertaining to elements of netball including movement, attack, defence, ball handling, recovery, positional restrictions, fair play, ethics and protocol of the game.

    The official signals and control requirements applicable to role of the coach is explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan practice sessions for netball coaching. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of the beginner coach is explained in the context of the safety of the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual contact, avoiding of personal injury, importance of effective learner supervision, correct warming up and preparation, use of correct equipment and facilities, conduct on the court.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual and team objectives as well as principles of the enjoyment of the game are utlilised in the planning of practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practice sessions includes coaching activities for beginner to intermediate players of the game.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of practice sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The scheduling of activities within the practice session is listed to ensure structure and time management of the session. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Activities should include warming up and cool down requirements, technical transfer of elements associated with catching, passing and shooting, movement and attack and defence skills.

    Conduct netball coaching activities.

    Netball terminology is explained in the context of the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The core skills of netball are explained and taught to participants in the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Skills of netball includes but is not limited to:
  • Ball handling, movement, catching, passing, shooting, attack and defence skills, transfers, positional restrictions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Warm up and cool down techniques are demonstrated to prepare for the game and to prevent personal injuries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Netball conditioning requirements are explained and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Training and coaching methods are utilised to meet the needs of the athlete being coached.

    Listening skills, communication feedback, teaching styles, instructional styles.

    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions.

    Practice activities are reviewed to address the needs of individuals and the team being coached. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Coaching records are maintained to record coaching sessions, improvement and modifications to coaching plans. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
