PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to coach basic goal keeping hockey skills at school and club level. Furthermore, the learner will be able to explain the tactical and technical elements required of goalkeeping in the game of hockey as well as the general hockey skills required at this level.

The qualifying learner will be able to coach hockey goal keeping to beginner level players.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating the use of goal keeping equipment.
  • Explaining the rules for goal keeping in hockey.
  • Coaching hockey goal keeping skills.

    Correct sizing of goal-keeping equipment is explained in relation to the safety and the purpose of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of each piece of goal keeping equipment is described in terms of the function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Demonstrate the safe use of goalkeeping equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fitness and strength requirements of players are explained in terms of wearing and carrying the equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the rules for goal keeping in hockey.

    The role of the goalkeeper in a hockey game is explained in terms of the function and purpose.

    Tournament rules for goal keeping are explained as they relate to different competition protocols.

    The unique characteristics of goal keepers and the position of goal keeping is explained in relation to talent spotting.

    Lesson plans are compiled according to progressions relative to hockey goal keeping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practice sessions are facilitated in accordance with the lesson plan and specific conditioning needs for hockey goal keeping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hockey goal keeping drills are facilitated in relation to prescribed skills for improving hockey goal keeping technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Basic tactical principles are explained in relation to hockey goal keeping in a game situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Goal keeper game performance is evaluated and recorded in relation to training plan. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
