PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at people who operate as community development workers or are involved in community development initiatives, including government, non-government, and the private sector. The Unit Standard will enable learners to understand and explain the stages of human development and how these relate to the needs of the community.

The learner who achieves this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the stages of human development in terms of the changes individuals, groups and communities go through.
  • Identifying and explaining the needs of each developmental stage and group.
  • Exploring the impact of the stages of human development on community needs. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Understand the stages of human development in terms of the changes individuals, groups and communities go through. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different stages of human development are identified using appropriate reference points in the expected human lifespan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stages of human development are identified and explained in terms of the different characteristics of each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors that influence the stages of human development are discussed in terms of the influence of each factor and how it impacts on the stage. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include but are not limited to environment, cultural, biological, social, political, psychological, local economic development, micro and macro development.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effects of factors influencing human development in a community are discussed within a holistic framework.

    Individuals or groups are identified in a specific context relative to each developmental stage in order to conduct an accurate needs analysis.

    The needs of individuals and groups within each developmental stage are identified and described for a specific community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relevant needs of a specific community are discussed in terms of how best to address them in an integrated manner.

    Explore the impact of the stages of human development on community needs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors influencing the impact of the stages of human development are identified in terms of community development initiatives and projects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Factors within a specific community are listed and outlined in terms of how they influence the developmental stages within the community development project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report is prepared and presented outlining ways to address needs related to the human development stages of a specific community using an integrated approach.
