PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the knowledge to understand and use the Van Schoor method of train control. They will be able to respond appropriately to the Van Schoor token and warning advice within own area of responsibility to ensure safe movement on rail.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the use of the Van Schoor method of train control.
  • Adhering to the specific instructions on the Van Schoor token and warning advice.
  • Complying with the pre-determined train arrangements at unattended places.

    The types of Van Schoor tokens and warning advices are identified according to train working rules.

    The purpose of each type of token and warning advice is explained according to train working rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures for the receipt and verification of the Van Schoor token are explained according to train working rules. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Adhere to the specific instructions on the Van Schoor token and warning advice.

    Information on the token/warning advice is received and verified according to train working rules.

    The token is retained as authority to move over a specific section in accordance with information on the token.

    Procedures for hand-over of the token at the end of a specific section are complied with according to train working rules.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
