A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Install a range of manually operated valves in an irrigation system.
  • Install non return and foot valves in an irrigation system.
  • Select the correct positions in an irrigation system to install air release valves.
  • Identify the situations when a pressure reducing valve is necessary.
  • Install pressure relief and pressure reducing valves in an irrigation system.
  • Understand the operation and uses of a solenoid valve for irrigation control.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different types of manually operated valves are described within the context of their uses in an irrigation system according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The particular features of a gate valve are described in terms of its construction and slow closing characteristics and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The particular features of a stop cock are described in terms of its positive sealing and slow closing characteristics and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The particular features of a ball cock are described in terms of its ease of opening and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The particular features of a butterfly valve are described in terms of its compact construction and ease of operation and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The particular features of a diaphragm valve are described in terms of its positive sealing and ease of maintenance and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The reasons why gate valves should not be utilised as sprayline control valves are explained within the context of their "metal to metal" means of closure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The benefits of using ball cocks as sprayline control valves are explained within the context of their "metal to Teflon" means of closure.

    The particular features of a piston NRV are described in terms of its positive sealing and spring return and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The particular features of a pilot controlled diaphragm NRV are described in terms of its controlled closure and positive sealing and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    The operation of a "swing" NRV is described in terms of its sudden closure and tendency to cause water hammer in a system according to manufacturer's specifications.

    The particular features of a wafer NRV are described in terms of its compact construction and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The important role that an air release valve plays in an irrigation system is explained within the context of the removal of air and the lessening of water hammer in an irrigation system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The function of a vacuum breaker valve in an irrigation system is explained with regards to the protection against a pipe collapse and the ingress of air when a pipeline is drained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A pressure air release valve is described in terms of its method of operation and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A kinetic air release valve is described in terms of its ability to purge a large volume of air and the techniques for the installation of this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The advantages of using a dual acting air release and vacuum release valve are explained with regard to its flexibility and efficiency. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the various types of pressure control valves, their method of operation and the techniques to install them in an irrigation system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The occasions when a pressure reducing valve is required are explained in terms of the situations where a static pressure exceeds the pressure rating of the irrigation equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The techniques for the installation and setting of a pressure reducing valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The occasions when a pressure relief valve is required are explained in terms of the situations where the pressure may rise above the pressure rating of the piping and irrigation equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The techniques for the installation and setting of a pressure relief valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Describe the various uses of a remote controlled solenoid valve, its method of operation and the techniques to install them in an irrigation system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different uses that an irrigation solenoid valve can have in an irrigation system are explained with regard to the particular remote functions that they can perform. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method by which an irrigation solenoid valve operates is described in terms of its 24volt solenoid actuator and the hydraulic closure mechanism. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The techniques for the installation and setting of a solenoid valve, when installed for tank filling, are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The techniques for the installation and setting of a solenoid valve, when installed for sprayline control, are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The methods of connecting the solenoid's wires to the cables from an automatic irrigation controller are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance of using a waterproof cable joint is explained with respect to the corrosion that will take place if this is ignored.
