In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner is capable of explaining the Finger Jointing process and his/her role in it, which is to produce finger jointed lumber.

The Lumber Milling industry urgently requires appropriately trained persons to perform the relevant dry milling tasks in its Finger Jointing facilities.

The achievement of this unit standard will ensure that dry milling learners are correctly trained and qualified to perform the Finger Jointing process according to industry accepted norms.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard will be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to the NQF Level 1 requirements.
  • An understanding of the basics of the Lumber Milling process and the specifics of the Finger Jointing process.
  • The further knowledge and skills competencies equivalent to NQF Level 1 requirements for Finger Jointing.
  • Knowledge of work procedures, health and safety measures and environmental protection aspects equivalent to NQF Level 1 requirements.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The typical scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The Finger Jointing process facilities of a lumber mill.
  • The personnel involved in the process of Finger Jointing process.
  • The products that are produced.
  • The grading rules and specifications for the relevant range of products.
  • The work procedures relevant to Finger Jointing process as well as the safety and health stipulations and environmental management principles applicable to this work area.

The typical context of this unit standard is the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the activity of Finger Jointing process. The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate basic comprehension and employ a narrow range of skills.
  • For practical competence the learner has to show basic competence in a limited range of routine and familiar contexts under general supervision and quality control.
  • For reflexive competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle some limited responsibility for quantity and quality of own output.
