PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to operate log debarking facilities in green timber processing area of Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Assemble all the tools and equipment required to set up and operate the debarking facility in the prescribed manner.
  • Set up and test the debarking facility according to industry standards.
  • Operate the debarking facility in the prescribed manner to prescribed standards.
  • Control the quantity and quality of debarked logs processed through the debarker(s).
  • Complete routine maintenance and lubrication schedules of the debarking facility.

    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1.

    Ancillary materials handling equipment is collected and inspected to confirm good working condition according to worksite procedures.

    Set up and test the debarking facility according to industry standards.

    Debarking equipments are checked to identify damages according to worksite procedures.

    Complete routine maintenance and lubrication schedules of the debarking facility.

    Maintenance reports are done and processed in line with operative company procedures.

    Maintenance reports are processed in line with maintenance schedules. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
