PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to select, prepare, place and use samples in Lumber drying process.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Collect kiln drying samples which will be representative in number and appearance to the total number of planks in a kiln stack.
  • Prepare samples for placement in the kiln stack to be dried.
  • Place samples in the correct positions in the stack, and connect to moisture content monitors where relevant.
  • Determine moisture content accurately at the relevant times.
  • Record kiln sample data correctly.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect kiln drying samples which will be representative in number and appearance to the total number of planks in a kiln stack. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Flat sawn, radial sawn, flat/radial sawn, sapwood, heartwood, total number of boards in stack.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of a representative sample is defined according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of collecting samples is described in a manner that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the concept of a representative sample according to sampling procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of non-sampling in a lumber drying process are explained according to quality procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare samples for placement in the kiln stack to be dried. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Clean samples, kiln samples, moisture, content samples, drying stress samples, sizes,representative numbers.

    Kiln samples is prepared according to worksite procedures.

    The procedures and techniques applied to prepare these samples comply with the prescriptions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The collection of samples is cleaned and cut as prescribed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Place samples in the correct positions in the stack, and connect to moisture content monitors where relevant. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Width of stack, height of stack, wet side, dry side, top of load, middle, bottom; the relevant moisture content monitors, moisture content resistance meters.

    The procedures followed to place the samples comply with company operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The samples are placed in the correct positions and where relevant are connected to moisture content monitor equipment as required.

    Determine moisture content accurately at the relevant times. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Wet weight, oven-dry weight, intermittent weight during drying process, formulae to calculate wet moisture content, sample weight at target moisture content or moisture content resistance meters' or monitor's readings.

    The importance of determining moisture content accurately at the relevant times is described according to worksite procedures.

    The instruments for determining moisture content accurately are identified according to worksite procedures.

    The moisture content of the wood before and during drying is performed according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures and techniques for determining the moisture content are applied according to worksite procedures.

    Record kiln sample data correctly.

    Moisture content section-green weight, oven dry weight; kiln sample-green weight, intermittent (daily) weights, calculated final weight or Resistance meter or monitor readings.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
