PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to stack lumber for kiln drying.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Sort planks from the green chain into the appropriate dimension classes.
  • Prepare stacking bay/mechanical stacking for the stacking process.
  • Prepare kiln trolley to receive planks/parcels of planks/stack.
  • Stack planks/boards for lumber drying as prescribed.
  • Place stickers to give appropriate support to each layer of planks.
  • Apply restraining devices to kiln load to minimise distortion of planks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Understanding of the different dimensions that need to be assembled for individual drying stacks is demonstrated with specific reference to thickness, width and length. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Planks for the drying process are sorted according to operative company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stacking bay/mechanical stacking for the stacking process is prepared according to the policies and procedures of the company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stacking bay/mechanical stacking is prepared for the stacking process as in line with the expectation of the company's standard.

    Knowledge of the stacking bay components/mechanical, stacker mechanisms and the procedures and techniques to prepare them for stacking, is administered as reflected in the set company's procedures.

    The prepared stacking bay/mechanical stacker is in the required condition after the stacking process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The preparation of the kiln trolleys to receive the load for drying is according to procedures and techniques.

    The trolley condition is according to worksite procedures.

    Planks are placed and stacked for drying according to worksite procedures.

    Place stickers to give appropriate support to each layer of planks.

    Dimensions, spacement and vertical alignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stickers are positioned on a stack of lumber for drying according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All the planks in the stack are supported as prescribed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Apply restraining devices to kiln load to minimise distortion of planks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Restraining devices are applied to the load of lumber to be kiln dried in order to minimize distortion in line with company operative procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Restraining devices used are applied according to prescribed procedures and techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The planks in a kiln load are correctly restrained to minimize distortion according to worksite procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
