PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to inspect used saw blades before and after servicing in saw shop of a Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Inspect used saw blades for damage prior to servicing in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • Identify damage and faults to used saw blades before and after cleaning in the Saw Shop.
  • Explain the markings used to highlight damage and faults found on the saw blades.
  • Report damage and faults found on used saw blades.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the basic activities of the Lumber Milling process.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environmental that can be described as the lumber mill with all the processing equipment.
  • The whole environment including equipment, tools and instruments that can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop in the Lumber Mill.
  • All the personnel involved in all the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the material that is handled and used in this work area.
  • All the relevant work procedures and safety, health and environmental management requirements relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All types of blades and other cutting tools in the Lumber Mill.
  • The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a learner at NQF Level 2 in Saw Doctoring and specifically to inspect used saw blades for damage prior to servicing in the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 1, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate basic comprehension and employ a narrow range of skills.
  • For practical competence the learner has to show basic competence in a limited range of established and familiar contexts under general supervision and quality control.
  • For reflexive competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle some limited responsibility for quantity and quality of own output.

    Explain the markings used to highlight damage and faults found on the saw blades.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Key features/markings used to highlight damage and faults found on the saw blades are identified in terms of damaged caused according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The extent of damage caused to the saw blades is assessed according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different options of fixing the damage caused are explained according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Report damage and faults found on used saw blades.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
