PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is aimed at individuals required to use navigational skills to plot the position and progress of a vessel on the high seas using the navigational aids normally found on the bridge of a fishing vessel. The individual will be able to use radar to plot the position of other vessels both in relation to his/her own vessel and in absolute terms. In addition individuals will be able to project the course and speed of such vessels as well as probable positions at a given point in time.
In particular, learners will be able to: |

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Demonstrate the use navigational aids in an operational environment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The physical principles underlying the functioning of a magnetic compass is used in the demonstration of compass use in the operational environment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The use of radar is demonstrated as it applies to operational requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The use of a rangefinder is demonstrated as it applies to the operational environment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Global positioning system apparatus is used according to operational requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The error inherent in the application of navigational aids is taken into account and corrected for. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Navigational aids includes:
|
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Use nautical charts to plot the position of a vessel at sea. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
An explanation is given of the features and navigational advantages of the projections used in charts, especially the Mercator Projection and the Lambert's Conformal Projection. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Relevant information is accessed off a nautical chart to make successful navigation possible. |

A vessels position, course and speed at sea are plotted trough the use of navigational aids. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Plotting includes but is not limited to:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Knowledge of a vessels position, course and speed at a given time is used to determine estimated time of arrival as it applies to identified destinations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The position of vessels in relation to another is determined through the use of navigational aids. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
