PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals who are involved in the promotion of conservation awareness particularly as it applies to fisheries compliance and the marine ecosystem environment. Individuals will gain the skills and competencies required to educate and inform stakeholders operating in and accessing the environment so as to address the knowledge and understanding of individuals and users of the environment in support of the necessity to conserve the environment for future use and benefits.

In particular, individuals will be able to:
  • Identify the purpose of the promotion of conservation awareness as it applies to the marine environment.
  • Identify conservation awareness intervention requirements in the area of operation.
  • Promote conservation awareness in the area of operation.

    The role of conservation is identified as it applies to marine ecosystems and the fisheries environment.

    Range includes but is not limited to:
  • Maintaining of habitat integrity, promotion of the survival of species, sustainable and unsustainable use of marine ecosystems, identification of protected species.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Non-compliance relating to fisheries legislation is identified in terms of its impact on the conservation of the marine environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of conservation awareness promotion is identified as it applies to the community, nature onservation and a conservation area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for operational environment includes but is not limited to:
  • Commercial and recreational users of the environment, subsistence users of the environment, recreational users and communities operating within the environment.

    Conservation awareness needs are identified and defined as it applies to the area of operation.

    Range of needs includes but is not limited to:
  • Types of users, specific challenges including non-compliance to permit conditions, recurring incidences of
    non-compliance, specific conditions applicable to the main resources utilisation activities observed in the area of operation.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Intervention requirements are identified in relation to identified challenges and areas of non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Intervention approaches are identified so as to assess the most effective method of awareness creation in relation to the identified needs.

    Promote conservation awareness in an area of operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles, objectives and methods to be employed is determined for the planning of a conservation awareness activity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for a conservation awareness activity includes but is not limited to:
  • Training and information distribution through information sessions and / or design and distribution of information brochures addressing identified information needs and / or a combination of the two.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An awareness intervention is designed that is appropriate for the audience and focus area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for appropriateness includes but is not limited to:
  • Age group, level of education and understanding, conservation or legal awareness to be addressed, access, distribution of information.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Logistical arrangements is planned and executed for a conservation awareness intervention. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for logistical arrangements includes but is not limited to:
  • Venue, transport, infrastructure, material, equipment, tools, printing of materials.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An conservation awareness intervention activity is implemented according to concluded planning.

    The impact of a conservation activity is monitored through observation of changes in behaviour as it applies to legislative compliance issues.

    A report is compiled according to operational requirements so as to suggest future actions in support of conservation awareness promotion. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
