PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to conduct a brake test on a train equipped with a vacuum and/or air brake system to facilitate the safe movement on rail in accordance with company specific procedures and operational requirements.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and explaining the purpose and function of the brake equipment on a train.
  • Setting up and test a vacuum and/or air brake system on a train.
  • Describing, identifying and understanding the purpose, working and failure of the related brake valves/system in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
  • Diagnosing brake faults and performing repairs.
  • Qualifying and returning the locomotive or train set to service.

  • The testing of a train may occur in different yard layouts/mainline/siding/shed/workshop (might or might not include high voltage overhead traction).
  • A train may include but is not limited to all types and models of motor coaches, plain trailer (PT), wagons and locomotives in service.

    The function of the brake equipment on a train fitted with a brake system is identified and explained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    The stages of the brake tests are explained in terms of testing procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up and test a vacuum and/or air brake system on a train.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A train's brake system is set up for the operation of the train in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The air campaign plan may include but is not limited to legal prescripts, environmental issues and occupational health and safety.

    A train's brake system is tested for the operation of the train in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible fault conditions are explained in terms of their impact on the braking system and safety.

    Corrective actions for each identified fault condition are explained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Describe related brake valves/systems.

    Major deviations identified are communicated to authorised individuals in accordance with worksite specific requirements.

    Actions to be taken to restore the service are explained in accordance with regulatory and safety procedures.

    Potential repairs and maintenance problems are explained with examples pertaining to their impact on the operations schedule.

    Qualifying brake tests are conducted according to specific worksite procedures in order to meet operational requirements.

    Serviceability of the train is confirmed and certified according to specific worksite procedures in order to meet operational requirements.

    The required safety equipment is removed and stored according worksite specific requirements.

    Train is made available for operations according worksite specific requirements.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
