In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard is able to check the aircraft altitude capability and on route climb performance and adjust the aircrafts performance to reflect the impact of aircraft weight growth. Learners will be able to calculate planning block times from the gathered data and identify any deviations from planned operating times. Learners will also be able to determine optimum cruise speeds and time related costs in order to optimise total direct operating cost. Learners will also be able to analyse and quantify performance level deviations and liable with relevant parties regarding the deviations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Auditing aircraft performance.
  • Monitoring experienced block times.
  • Determining aircraft cruise speeds.
  • Administering fuel burn retention guarantees.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 5 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Audit aircraft performance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Existing performance degradation factors are reviewed in order to compare fuel burn to expected standard.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Performance degradation factors includes but are not limited to engine efficiency, airframe cleanliness, control surface rigging, accuracy of flight instruments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Aircraft altitude capability and on route climb performance is checked in order to determine deviation from expected standard.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Aircraft performance is adjusted to reflect the impact of aircraft weight growth.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Aircraft cruise speed management is evaluated for accuracy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Aircraft performance as corrected for atmospheric variations is checked for accuracy.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Monitor experienced block times.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Actual flight and taxi time data are gathered and recorded for statistical analysis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Planning block times are calculated in order to compile future schedules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Deviations from planned operating times are identified in order to establish causes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Remedial action is monitored to ensure effectiveness of implementation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Determine aircraft cruise speeds.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Time-related costs are compiled for the use and calculation of aircraft economic cruise speeds.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Fuel price information is sourced and recorded into the flight planning programme.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Optimum cruise speed schedules are determined in order to optimise fuel uplift requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Optimum cruise speed schedules includes but are not limited to economic cruise speed adjusted for applicable cost and fixed cruise speed as may apply.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Changes in cost of time and fuel are monitored in order to optimise total direct operating cost.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Administer fuel burn retention guarantees.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Initial aircraft performance levels are recorded in order to establish a baseline for reference.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
In-service aircraft performance data is recorded for comparison with baseline reference.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Performance level deviations are analysed and quantified in terms of manufacturers guarantees.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Compensation levels are calculated according to guarantee conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Relevant parties are liaised with in order to ensure understanding of the deviations from the guaranteed baselines.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
