PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge about various components of structural steel in order to produce detailed drawings for fabrication purposes. These structural steel components include beams, latticed girders, columns, roof trusses, bracings and portal frames. The details in the drawings include dimensions, notes and other fabrication related information.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of structural steel detailing.
  • Applying knowledge of beams, plate and box girders to produce a workshop fabrication drawing.
  • Detailing bolted and welded columns.
  • Detailing bolted and welded latticed girders.
  • Detailing welded and bolted roof trusses.
  • Detailing bracings.
  • Detailing portal frames.
  • Compiling fabrication documentation.

    Terms used in structural steal environment are defined in practical terms.

  • Web, flange, toe, heel, angle cleat, gusset plate, centre marks and back marks.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Structural steel components are identified and described in accordance with relevant SANS (South African National Standards) for structural steelwork.

    Structural steel tables are identified and explained in accordance with relevant SANS (South African National Standards) for structural steelwork.
