PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the principles, functions and construction of wheels and well sets as well as being able to examine and measure the diameter, profile and lateral dimensions. The learners will also be able to disassemble, clean and reassemble the wheel sets and finalise the process.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the factors critical for the selection of wheel sets.
  • Qualifying and selecting wheel sets.
  • Removing and installing wheel sets.
  • Completing the installation process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles and functions of wheels and wheel set are explained applicable to the rail industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The construction of the wheels and wheel sets is identified visually and described in accordance with manufactures specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not selecting the correct wheels and wheel sets are explained in terms of its impact on safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Qualify and select wheel sets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, equipment and instruments to be used are selected in order to measure and qualify wheels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wheels are examined in order to establish further actions according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The wheel is measured in order to qualify the wheel set according to procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measurements must be taken of the wheel diameter and profile.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The wheel sets are measured for lateral dimensions in order to qualify for the network rail gauge according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Wheel set is selected according to the locomotive/motor coach allowable tolerances. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Remove and install wheel sets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Defective wheel set and motors are disassembled from the bogie in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Wheel set and components are cleaned and prepared for installation in accordance with manufacture's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Qualified and selected wheel set is reassembled into the bogie in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Complete the installation process.

    The wheel sets are completed in accordance with worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, material and equipment used are cleaned and stored in accordance with worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The workplace is cleaned and free from hazards in accordance with worksite requirements and housekeeping practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The report on work performed is completed and delivered in accordance with worksite requirements.

    Report requirements include for format, content, accuracy and distribution.
