PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this Unit Standard is able to determine the landing field performance and the landing distance available (LDA). Learners will also be able to analyse the effects of configuration deviations and their effects on missed approach climb, brake temperature and field length performance. Learners will also be able to calculate landing performance to suit the prevailing aircraft configuration deviations. Learners will also be able to calculate the impact of pressure altitude and outside air temperature (OAT) on relevant engine performance parameters.
The qualifying learner is capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
All competencies defined in the Unit Standard must be assessed or performed as prescribed by the Airplane Flight Manual, South Africa-Civil Aviation Regulations (SA-CARS), South Africa-Civil Aviation Technical Specifications (SA-CATS). |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Establish landing field performance. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Landing field performance must calculated for the current pressure altitude and prevailing atmospheric conditions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
ICAO Type A survey drawings are interpreted in accordance with aircraft flight manual (AFM) to determine landing distance available. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Landing distance available (LDA) is adjusted in order to take into account various influences on the performances of the aircraft. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Influences include the effect of runway slope, wind component, braking configuration, brakes de-activation, anti-skid inoperative and runway dry or wet. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Landing distance required is calculated for the use of speed brakes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
The use of speed brakes includes both automatic and manual deployment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Landing field length limit weights are calculated for the available effective landing distance according to the AFM. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Applicable landing distance includes but is not limited to the distance corrected for flap setting, brake configuration, anti-skid condition, runway surface condition, spoiler deployment method and wind components along the runway. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Provide for non-standard aircraft landing configurations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The non-standard aircraft configuration or deviation is identified in order to calculate appropriate landing performance to ensure a safe operation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Non-standard aircraft configurations or deviations includes but is not limited to those contained in the Minimum Equipment List and Configuration Deviation List. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The effects of configuration deviations on aircraft performance are analysed by assessing the effect on missed approach climb, brake temperatures, and field length performance. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
The effect of configuration deviations include amount of drag incurred, loss of braking efficiency and effect of structural weight limits. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Landing performance is calculated to suit the prevailing aircraft configuration deviations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Landing performance calculations include adjustments to ensure aircraft performance meets legal requirements. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Produce go-around thrust setting tables. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Impact of pressure altitude and outside air temperature (OAT) on relevant engine performance parameters is calculated according to manufacturer's specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Thrust level reading is corrected for airspeed according to manufacturer's specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Settings are calculated within the limits specified in manufacturer's documentation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Limits includes but is not limited to case pressure, turbine inlet temperature, exhaust gas temperature, engine temperature, engine speed limits, air conditioning configuration and anti ice system operation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Limits of applicability of settings are determined according to constraints of engine certification as per manufacturer's specifications. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
