PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

A competent learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of different types of welds.
  • Test strength of welds.
  • Understand safety requirements.
  • Report on tests.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for vehicle manufacturers in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Types of welding include spot welding, CO2, MIG, TIG and Brazing.

Additional range information is provided at specific outcomes and assessment criteria as necessary.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of different types of welds.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The different methods of joining metals by welding are identified and described in terms of their benefits and weaknesses in a given application.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The types of machine and equipment used for the different welding processes are described in terms of how they operate.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Different metals are described in terms of how they could be joined and the strengths and weaknesses of different welding processes are contrasted.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Welding methods are selected for given applications that are appropriate to the situation and will provide an adequate strength joint.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Test strength of welds.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Testing methods include chisel test, cut-out and tear-off.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Tools required to test welds are identified and selected according to the type of test to be conducted.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Tools include hand tools and power tools.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tools are used in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The frequency of conducting tests is identified and explained in accordance with company procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The thickness and penetration of welds are measured against manufacturer specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The diameters of spot welds are measured against manufacturer specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Visual checks confirm the strength of the tested weld.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Understand safety requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The importance of welds maintaining a design strength is described in terms of safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The consequences of welds breaking loose are described in terms of potential injury to personnel and liability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The importance of complying with international manufacturer safety standards is described in terms of licensing to manufacture and employment opportunities.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Report on tests.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
International test report standards are identified and explained in terms of format and contents.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A report is generated that captures the number and type of tests conducted.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The results of the tests are recorded in an internationally agreed format.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The report is communicated to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The report is compiled in accordance with workplace format requirements and procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
    Restore the work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The work area is restored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Restoring work area includes packing away of tools and equipment and cleaning the work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

The following embedded knowledge is addressed in an integrated way in the unit standard:
  • How to use Personal Protective Equipment.
  • The importance of maintaining cleanliness and condition of the workplace.
  • How to identify different types of welds.
  • How to test different types of welds.
  • How to use specific testing tools and equipment.
  • How to report work conducted.
  • The importance of reporting findings.

This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
