PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

A competent learner will be able to:
  • Inspect panels for metal forming defects.
  • Repair identified defects.
  • Clean metal panels.
  • Confirm status of panel and report to relevant personnel. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for vehicle manufacturers the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Metal forming defects include, but are not limited to pimples, dents, cracks, high spots, salt pans, burrs and craters.

    Additional range information is provided at specific outcomes and assessment criteria as necessary.

    Inspect panels for metal forming defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The metal forming process is described in terms of how the panel is formed and how faults may originate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of not repairing the forming defect are described in terms of the effect on the process after paint has been applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different types of materials that can be formed are described in terms of their characteristics and repair methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of defects are classified according to severity and repair methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Inspection methods are selected that are appropriate for the type of defect and ensure that all defects are identified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection methods include visual and touch.

    Repair identified defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools required to repair defects are identified and selected according to the type of repair to be conducted. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools include had tools and power tools.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools are used in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are repaired in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The repair method selected ensures that the metal is not overstressed during the repair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The repaired surface is ensured to be in accordance with pre-paint specifications.

    Clean metal panels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Solvents are identified and selected for use in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Solvents and cleaning agents used are appropriate to the panels being cleaned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cleaning methods are applied in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cleaning methods include manual cleaning and automated cleaning.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All impurities are removed from the body panels. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Confirm status of panel and report to relevant personnel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The panel is confirmed to be in accordance with pre-paint specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A report is generated that includes all defects repaired and the repair methods applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The report is communicated to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The report is compiled in accordance with workplace format requirements and procedures.

    Restore the work area.

    The work area is restored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restoring work area includes packing away of tools and equipment and cleaning the work area.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.
