PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This is one of four Unit Standards for the installation of waterproofing systems. These systems play a critical role by ensuring that water does not penetrate through various surfaces and cause damage to them or that it does not create a health hazard through dampness. Learners will be able to assess a situation and know which waterproofing installation system they will need to use to perform the task.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In-situ reinforced systems include: acrylic, bituminous emulsions, and cementitious. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate understanding of in-situ reinforced and non-reinforced liquid based waterproofing system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The in-situ reinforced and non-reinforced liquid based waterproofing systems is described in terms of its differences with the other waterproofing systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health and safety requirements pertaining to the task are understood and adhered to ensure compliance with legislation, building regulations and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Materials and equipment for in-situ reinforced and non-reinforced liquid based systems are transported, handled and stored according to standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The drawings and scope of work are described to ensure that the work is performed within anticipated time frames according to system requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools are inspected, used, cleaned and stored according to work procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to install in-situ reinforced and non-reinforced liquid based waterproofing system on surfaces above ground (horizontal surfaces) and below ground (vertical surfaces). 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Preparation covers installation on vertical and horizontal surfaces and above or below ground. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The condition of surface on which the waterproofing needs to be applied is evaluated and falls to outlets are established according to procedure related to horizontal surfaces-and possible drainage systems below ground (the bottom of vertical surfaces). 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conditions include suitability, soundness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dangers and risks associated with open gas flame are identified and reported to relevant authority according to procedure where applicable with system being applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Surfaces are cleaned, swept and prepared according to procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation includes removal of sharp objects and protrusions, removal of dust, dirt and surface crud, and repair of surface defects where necessary.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Priming of surface is performed where necessary to bind surface and lay dust, and is allowed to flash off (solvents to evaporate) according to procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Priming includes binding surface, laying dust and flashing off.

    Install in-situ reinforced and non-reinforced liquid based waterproofing system above ground (Horizontal surfaces).

    The membrane is evaluated and set out according to falls and prevailing weather as per procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Installation is performed in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and detailing to suit the characteristics of the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tests are conducted where possible and work handed over to supervisor according to procedure.

    Site is cleared and made safe to client's satisfaction according to site-requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
