PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to understand how the hair relaxing process works and to perform a complete hair relaxing service.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain hair relaxing.
  • Prepare for a hair relaxing service.
  • Perform a hair relaxing procedure.
  • Perform a neutralising procedure. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Identify disorders of the skin and hair at NQF Level 3.
  • Shampoo, Condition and treat scalp and hair at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Hair relaxing includes but is not limited to hair relaxing products containing sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide and ammoniumthioglycolate (both lye and no-lye relaxers).
  • Neutralising includes colour indicator/signal cream/liquid and / neutralizing shampoo.
  • The degree of curl removed indicates that a relaxer, S-curl or blowout is performed.
  • Relaxing includes but is not limited to:
    > Virgin hair.
    > Regrowth on hair that has been previously relaxed.
    > Correction of a previous uneven relaxing treatment.

    The science of hair relaxer neutralisation is explained as required by a hair stylist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different types of chemical relaxers are explained in terms of their functions and preferred application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety precautions for a relaxing service are explained according to industry standards.

    Prepare for a hair relaxing service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment are selected that are appropriate to the hair and scalp in a given situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate type and strength of relaxer is selected and prepared in line with hair texture, the results of hair and scalp analysis and client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Barrier cream is applied on hairline and scalp in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and salon requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An appropriate application technique is selected in accordance with hair analysis and manufacturer's instructions.

    Perform a hair relaxing procedure.

    Hair is sectioned and sub-sectioned according to manufacturer's instructions and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemical relaxer is applied according to client requirements and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Smoothing techniques are performed according to manufacturer's instructions to achieve the desired outcome. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Chemical processes are monitored and timed according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform a neutralising procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Neutralising products are selected according to chemical relaxer used and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Neutraliser is applied according to manufacturer's instructions and client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tangles are removed from the hair to ease the discomfort of the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate after-care products and procedures are selected and applied for relaxed hair.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
