PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to plan and prepare for the erection of steel structures according to specifications and drawings. This includes an understanding of structural steel erecting projects, materials, safety requirements, site establishment and preparing for lifting components of a steel structure. Learners who achieve the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of structural steel erectors within the construction industry.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and scope of structural steel erecting.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of structural steel materials.
  • Using and maintaining tools and safety equipment.
  • Performing planning and site establishment activities.
  • Assembling and preparing steel components for lifting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of steel structures are identified and described in terms of standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Steel structures includes, but is not limited to:
  • Steel platforms, staircases, cat ladders, portal frames, latticed/truss buildings, beams, columns and plate girders.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods of fixing steel structures are identified and explained according to job specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Bolted, welded and chemical adhesives.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Loading and offloading steel elements/components of the steel structure is explained according to sequencing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Handling and storage of structural steel components/elements is carried out according to safety requirements.

    Handling methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Manual and mechanical.

    Visual inspection of structural steel components/elements are conducted during handling and defects/damaged are reported according to organizational procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment used in structural steel erection are identified and their use is demonstrated according to manufacturer's instructions and site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety equipment used in structural steel erection is identified and the use thereof described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Hard hats, safety shoes, eye and ear protection, high visibility vests, safety harnesses and gloves.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, equipment and safety equipment are inspected and maintained for functionality in accordance with manufacturer's operating instructions.

    Perform planning and site establishment activities.

    Drawings, dispatch and bolt destination lists for the assembly of structural steel components are interpreted according to the specifications.

    Identified hazards and risks associated with structural steel erection projects are assessed and reported according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources required for a structural steel erection project is evaluated and arranged in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Site facilities are constructed in accordance with municipal by-laws, fire department and organizational procedures.

    Components are received on site and unloaded in accordance with safety legislation requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Quality and quantity of delivered components is checked and verified against documentation.
