PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the knowledge of steel reinforcing material and methods for fixing reinforcing to assemble and install reinforcing cages. The learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge of types of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment in adhering to the correct steel fixing sequence and South African National Standards (SANS) requirements for the different types of ties.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing types and uses of reinforcing.
  • Explaining safety requirements of the work area.
  • Preparing to install reinforcing steel.
  • Installing reinforcing.

    The installation procedure is planned prior to work commencing according to latest revision of drawings, bending schedules and contractors programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reinforcing materials required for the task are identified according to latest revision of drawings and bending schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reinforcing materials are prepared and stacked for installation at the work area according to site requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Shortages and damaged materials are reported to designated personnel for corrective action according to site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Faults to previously installed materials are assessed and reported to designated personnel according to site procedures.

  • Positioning, lap length and condition of reinforcing bars.

    Positioning and spacing of reinforcing steel are identified and marked in accordance with latest revision of drawings and bending schedules.

    The sequence of installing reinforcing is followed in accordance with standard industry practice.

    Ties used for given situations and types of bars are appropriate in terms of SANS requirements.

    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and safety requirements.

    Reinforcing is checked on completion to ensure compliance with engineer's drawings and written instructions.
