PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform a complete make-up service for day and evening purposes as well as special requirements for bridal and photographic purposes.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain make-up processes and products.
  • Prepare client and workstation.
  • Apply make-up for different requirements.

    Use of skin cleaning and preparation products and procedures is explained in relation to skin types. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Use includes but is not limited to:
  • Contraindications to skin cleaning and make-up products.
  • Selection of suitable products and procedures for use with different skin types and conditions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Make up products are explained according to their functions, advantages and disadvantages for a given application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Functions of make-up products include but are not limited to:
  • Use of products in relation to the range of skin types and pigmentation.
  • Home care products.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Make up tools are explained according to their functions, maintenance and care.

    Make-up techniques are explained according to the effect they have on facial shapes and structures.

    Differences between day, evening, bridal and photographic make-up techniques are explained in accordance with industry standards.

    Lighting requirements are established in accordance with the make-up application.

    The workstation for a make-up service is prepared according to organisational and hygienic requirements.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Client's skin is analysed to determine skin type requirements for the make-up service.

    Skin types include but are not limited to:
  • Dry, normal, oily, combination, sensitive, dehydrated, mature, light, dark.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client's face shape is analysed to determine a make-up strategy for highlighting and shading.

    A make-up design is agreed with the client that will achieve the desired effect in the circumstances in which make-up will be worn.

    The sequencing of make-up application is explained and demonstrated according to manufacturer's instructions and industry standards for the given application.

    Make-up products are selected according to skin type, facial shape and makeup purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Make-up products are applied according to organisational requirements and manufacturer's instructions to achieve the required results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate hygiene is maintained throughout the makeup service according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Make-up tools are selected and used according to organisational requirements and manufacturer`s instructions to achieve the required results.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
