PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 3 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to clean and lubricate strip, assemble and set/tune a range of clothing machinery. Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose a range of clothing machinery and to utilise garment construction skills in testing machines. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 or equivalent qualification. Learners will have attained a relevant qualification at NQF Level 2 or must have had at least 1 years working experience within an industrial sewing environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Range of machines used will be:
  • Single needle lockstitch machines.
  • Double needle lockstitch machines.
  • Overlock machines.
  • Safety stitch machines.
  • Chainstitch machines.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Clean and lubricate industrial sewing machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The demonstration confirms that machines are cleaned and lubricated according to manufacturers' specifications and safety procedures observed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The explanation outlines, how industrial sewing machines are set up after cleaning and lubrication, to meet specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The explanation outlines, the impact of non-conformance to cleaning and lubrication processes and procedures is explained in accordance with enterprise policies and procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse sewing faults and make corrective adjustments on industrials sewing machines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Faults are identified, analysed and corrected according to manufacturer's specifications.

    The demonstration confirms that the appearance, stitch formation, elongation, pucker, strength, thread type, needle type are in accordance with company and quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Adjustments are tested for compliance with product specification. The demonstration confirms that the seam appearance meets company and quality standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Set up industrial sewing machines to meet product specifications.

    The demonstration confirms that machines are threaded according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected needles and thread match fabric requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Needles are replaced according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe working practices and procedures for conducting repairs are observed throughout the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable clothing machinery to be maintained according to industry and manufacturers specifications.

    The assessor needs to be competent in the planning and conducting of assessment of learning outcomes as described in the unit standard: "Plan and conduct assessment of learning outcomes NQF Level 4":
  • Assessors need to register with the relevant education and training quality assurance body.
  • The assessor must be in possession of the NQF level 4 sewing machine mechanician qualification or equivalent AND have a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience in this field.
