PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology field.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Establish conditions for maintaining Integrated Process Control Loops.
  • Diagnose faults in Integrated Process Control Loops.
  • Repair equipment in an Integrated Process Control Loop.
  • Establish normal operating conditions after completion.

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and development within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Process control loops includes but is not limited to pressure, level, temperature, flow, density, mass, and vibration.

    The range of this unit standard includes preventative maintenance of integrated process control loops, relating to temperature, flow, pressure, level and final control elements with associated equipment.

    Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.

    Requirements include but are not limited to Statutory requirements, National Standards and manufacturers specifications.

    The range of process control loops includes but is not limited to, open loops, closed loops, cascade loops and ratio control loops.

    Maintaining process control loops includes isolation, removal, calibration, installation and commissioning.

    Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.

    Requirements include but are not limited to Statutory requirements, National Standards and manufacturers specifications.

    Test equipment is connected and set up according to manufacturer`s instructions.

    The test is performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and all faults are identified.

    Test values are recorded and compared against values on application data sheets.

    Integrated Process Control Loops are decommissioned in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Functional tests are performed according to manufacturer`s instructions.

    Equipment and the integrated process control loop is re-assembled and calibrated according to manufacturer`s instructions.

    Relevant documentation is completed in accordance with organisation requirements.

    Test equipment is disconnected and stored according to workplace procedures.
