PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be prepared for riding in a horse race correctly and safely. They will also be able to take the corrective actions required for horses that veer off a straight line or over race.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Riding the Equiciser at full speed in the jockey seat.
  • Explaining the corrective measures for a horse veering off a straight line.
  • Taking corrective action for a horse veering off a straight line.
  • Taking corrective action for a horse over racing.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Ride the equiciser at full speed in the jockey seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equiciser is ridden at full speed without the jockey falling back into the saddle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Balance is maintained in the jockey seat throughout the ride. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The action of pushing a horse in stride is demonstrated whilst riding the equiciser at full speed.

    Discuss the reasons for and impacts of a horse veering off a straight line.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between wandering, hanging and ducking are explained with an example of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dangers of horses veering off a straight line are explained in case studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of being aware of other horses' proximity is explained in order to race safely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for a horse wandering, hanging and ducking are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reasons could include but are not limited to injury, inexperienced horse, racing under lights, tiring horse, reaction to racing equipment, reaction to whip.

    Discuss and demonstrate the corrective action to be taken for a horse veering off a straight line.

    The action of correcting hanging horses is demonstrated on the equiciser at full speed.

    The action of correcting ducking a horse is demonstrated on the equiciser at full speed.

  • An Equiciser is a motorised, multi-speed mechanical horse.
  • Over racing refers to when a race horse is pulling in a race thereby using up too much energy.
  • The jockey seat is the stance a jockey uses whist exercising or racing a race horse.
  • Pushing a horse in stride refers to an athletic body movement of the jockey whilst racing.
  • Wandering refers to when a race horse shits or deviates off a straight course.
  • Hanging refers to a race horse leaning to one side, (Either left or right) while racing.
  • Ducking refers to when a race horse suddenly and quickly shits off a straight course.
