PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be confident when jumping a race horse from the starting stall at a race meeting where there may be many horses in the starting stalls. They will also be able to walk the race horse into the starting stalls at a race meeting and be able to control the horse whilst waiting for the start.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Riding the race horse to the starting stalls.
  • Loading the race horse from the saddle into the starting stalls at the race meeting.
  • Unit Standard: Preparing a race horse to jump at a race meeting. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Unit Standard: Demonstrate an understanding of basic horse racing strategies at NQF Level 3.
  • Unit Standard: Jump a race horse from the starting stalls at the training track at NQF Level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Ride the race horse to the starting stalls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedures to be followed are explained for riding the race horse to the starting stalls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The race horse is ridden past the grand stands according to local operator requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The race horse is ridden the remainder of the distance to the starting stalls according to instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain and demonstrate how to load the race horse into the starting stalls at the race meeting while mounted.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedures to be followed at the start are explained according to National Horseracing Authority regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The allocated starting stall is entered in accordance with instructions from the starter in a given scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods to keep a race horse calm in the starting stalls are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Racing officials are communicated with in order to ensure adherence to standard loading procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Racing officials may include but are not limited to handlers, starter, assistant starter, riding masters, veterinarian and stipendiary stewards.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare a race horse to jump at a race meeting from the starting stalls.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Any obstructions which may impede the race horse are explained in a given case study. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Obstructions could include but are not limited to handlers, lead rein, Monty Roberts blanket and hood.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method of advising the starter if not ready is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The race horse is made ready for the jump at a race meeting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Made ready may include but is not limited to positioning the horse and horse's head and sufficient rein is given.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Jump the race horse from the starting stalls at a race meeting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedures for jumping a race horse from the starting stalls are explained in a case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The starting stalls are exited as the start is affected according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The race horse is controlled after the jump as per instructions.

    Glossary of Terms:
  • Starting stalls refers to a bank of stalls used to effect the start of a horse race.
  • Jumping a horse from the starting stalls is the method of riding of the race horse in the correct manner out of the starting stalls.
