PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to apply knowledge of train roadworthiness and composition of trains to inspect and dispatch trains according to company-specific train working rules. They will understand the reporting procedures when any sub-standard equipment is detected and incorrect compilation of trains is identified.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Inspecting trains.
  • Rectifying train compilation.
  • Performing brake test.
  • Performing dispatching procedures.

    Inspect trains. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rail vehicles are inspected for vehicle defects in terms of roadworthiness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Train loads are inspected for composition compliance according to organizational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Loads include but are not limited to commuters/passengers and loads.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Train loads are inspected for indicators and other train and auxiliary equipment according to train working rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Identified defects are reported to relevant personnel according to organizational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Rectify train compilation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The compilation of train loads are rectified in relation to load profiles and defective vehicles/coaches. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    When the compilation of a train cannot be rectified in time, arrangements are made to effect the required compilation changes according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation for load compilation is completed and distributed according to organizational procedures.

    Perform brake test.

    The train driver's co-operation and concurrence is obtained to assist with the brake test procedures according to organizational procedures.

    The applicable brake test is performed according to organizational procedures.

    Documentation for brake tests is completed and distributed according to organizational procedures.

    Perform despatching procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
