PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to be confident at riding a race horse in a horse race. They will also be able to go through all the procedures required before and during the horse race confidently and correctly.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the effects that racing in a competitive race has on the jockey.
  • Explaining and employing the weigh-out and weigh-in procedures.
  • Riding a race horse in a race on the straight.
  • Riding a race horse in a race around the turn.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

  • A jockey will need to ride a minimum of fifteen races.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the effects that racing in a competitive race has on the jockey. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects of stress on the jockey are explained in case studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    How adrenaline affects a jockey is explained with examples of their actions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Racing in a competitive race is explained in terms of how it changes the way the ride is conducted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not understanding how a competitive race affects the jockey are explained in terms of the possible results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain and employ the weigh-out and weigh-in procedures.

    The procedure for weighing-in is explained in accordance with the National Horseracing Authority regulations.

    The weighing-in process is carried out in accordance with the National Horseracing Authority regulations.

    The procedure for weighing-out is explained according the National Horseracing Authority regulations.

    The weighing-out process is carried out in accordance with the National Horseracing Authority regulations.

    The rules will include but are not limited to clothing, equipment, saddle and fittings.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain and demonstrate how to ride a race horse in a race on the straight.

    A minimum of eight official races must be ridden.

    How to race down the race track in a race is explained in terms of safety and finishing position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Advantages which can be taken are explained in terms of riding in a race on the straight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The race is ridden on the straight in accordance with given instruction and selected strategy. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain and demonstrate how to ride a race horse in a race around the turn. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A minimum of seven official races must be ridden around the turn.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    What constitutes a false start is explained according to National Horseracing Authority rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Causes of false starts are described with an example of each one. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    False start causes may include but are not limited to a starting gate not opening, starting gate opening too soon, interference by a handler and a horse rearing before start effected.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Signals used to indicate a false start are explained with examples of what is used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Signals may include but are not limited to hooters, sirens and flags.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Processes to be followed in the event of a false start are explained in accordance with National Horseracing Authority rules.
