PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to understand how to read and interpret the necessary racing documents in order to ensure all things run smoothly on race day.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Reading and interpreting a race card the day before the race.
  • Checking that the race horse is fitted with the equipment stated in the race card.
  • Explaining the passport procedures and rules. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Read and interpret a race card the day before the race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The time on the race card is checked in order to determine the time the horse has to be on the race course. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment codes printed on the race card are explained with examples of each one. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment codes may include but are not limited to various shoes, tongue ties, blinkers, pacifiers, cheek pieces.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Printing errors are identified in order to determine action to be taken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Merit rating is checked against weight allocation for correctness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Racing colours are matched to the owner of the horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Actions to be taken on any discrepancies are explained in accordance with National Horseracing Authority rules and guidelines. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Check that the race horse is fitted with the stated equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The race horses' shoes are matched to what is printed in the race card. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment being carried by the race horse is matched to what is printed in the race card. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Action to be taken on any discrepancy is explained with examples of the rectification requirements and processes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain and apply the passport procedures and rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The passport is matched to the race horse to ensure conformity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Matching may include but is not limited to markings, colour and sex of the race horse.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Compulsory vaccinations are checked to ensure that they are up-to-date. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The starting stall certificate is checked to ensure that it has not expired. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Any changes with regard to the race horse or passport are checked to ensure they are recorded. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changes may include but are not limited to:
  • Gelding, scarring, subsequently acquired markings.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The sex of the race horse is checked to ensure it matches the passport.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
