PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to select and fit basic riding tack in the correct sequence in a safe and humane way and they will also be able to prepare a young race horse for lunging and then to conduct the lunging technique lunge a young race horse. Learners will also be able to select a rider to break in and back a young race horse and then to describe the indicators that show a young race horse is ready to be broken in.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Introducing the young race horse to basic riding tack.
  • Lunging a young race horse.
  • Backing a young race horse.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Introduce the young race horse to basic riding tack. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Racing tack may include but is not limited to loose ring snaffle, rubber snaffle, surcingwe, saddle, girth, side reins and horse boots. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The range of equipment is selected that is required for the breaking in and backing of a young race horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sequence for fitting basic riding tack is explained with examples of the fitting process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic riding tack is fitted to the young race horse in a safe environment and applying welfare principles. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Lunge a young race horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The young race horse is prepared for lunging according to worksite and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of the lunge rein, whip and verbal commands are explained with practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The young race horse is exercised by using the lunging technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The lunging tack is removed and stored after lunging according to worksite procedures.

    Back a young race horse.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The environment in which a young race horse may be backed is explained with reference to safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A rider is selected according to internationally accepted criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process of backing a young race horse is explained in a given scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The indicators of the young race horses readiness to be ridden are described in terms of safety to both horse and rider.
