PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to understand effects of reflexology techniques and treatments to normal and diseased body systems. The learner will also be able to relate the effects of therapeutic reflexology stimulation to the outcome of reflexology treatments.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the relationship between symptoms and specific reflexes related to body systems.
  • Explain the theory of zone therapy and mapping/charting of reflexes.
  • Identify specific treatments for given ailments.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the relationship between symptoms presented and specific reflexes related to body systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The body systems are described in terms of the evidenced manifestations of normal and abnormal functioning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Body systems include:
  • Communication, digestive, excretory, body protective, reproductive.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mechanisms contributing to imbalances in the body systems are identified as evidenced from patient observation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Symptoms are identified and explained in terms of the presented condition and relevant organ and/or system reflexes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    System reflexes include:
  • Cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, urinary, digestive, respiratory, skeletal, reproductive and central nervous reflexes.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the theory of zone therapy and mapping/charting of reflexes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The body is divided into generally accepted and recognised body zones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mapping or charting of reflexes indicates the reflex zones of the body, especially on feet, hands, body and ears that correspond to specific body parts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reflex actions are described in terms of their purpose and effect on the corresponding body system. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify specific treatments for given and identified ailments within reflexology paradigms.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Specific indicators are observed and interpretations are made in terms of consistency with presented symptoms and the specified paradigm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Indicators include:
  • Zonal locations, reflex indicators, bio-mechanic movement, meridian, five senses indicators and lifestyle advice.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Actions are recommended to facilitate the normalisation of the affected systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Observations of finding are documented and appropriate referrals are made when necessary.
