In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
A learner will be able to comply with the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) signalling system to conform to Principles of Safe Movement on Rail (POSMOR) related train working rules and safe movement in a railway environment.

Learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of railway signalling system.
  • Explain the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) signalling system.
  • Use the ATP signalling system in normal and degraded mode.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Communication at NQF Level 3.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because performance must be carried out:
  • In different weather conditions.
  • During day and night time.
  • In different yard layouts/mainline/siding (may or may not include overhead traction).
  • Under hazardous and abnormal conditions.

Procedures include but are not limited to Principles of Safe Movement on Rail (POSMOR) related principles.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of railway signalling system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The signalling system is described in terms of type, purpose and functions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The wayside signage indicators are described in terms of type, purpose and functions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Hands signals are described with reference to their purpose, application, and equipment used.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Signalling rules and procedures are described as applied in a railway system in accordance with company standards and procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) signalling system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The ATP signalling system is explained in terms of purpose and functions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
ATP modes are described in terms of the driving area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The ATP signalling system is explained in terms of the relationship between the running time and the characteristics of the section.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
ATP signalling rules and procedures are explained as applied in a railway system.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Use the ATP signalling system in normal and degraded mode.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The ATP system is tested in accordance with company standards and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The information and order given by the ATP system are described and applied in terms of the expected outcome.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The consequences of ATP failure are explained in terms of the impact on train movement.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
