PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to operate and regulate the safety of a railway station in accordance with company standards and procedures.

Learners will have the ability to:
  • Conduct opening and closing operation of the station.
  • Manage a railway station in normal mode.
  • Manage the station in a degraded (abnormal) situation.

    A railway station can include extended areas such as tunnels and car parks.

    Conduct opening and closing operation of the station.

    Typical layout of a station is described in terms of its functionality. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Layout includes but is not limited to ticket office, ablutions, workshops, escalators, passenger control gates.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Station equipment is described in terms of its functionality and purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Station equipment includes but is not limited to lifts, escalators, doors, fare gates, public address systems, public information systems, lighting, ticket vending machine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Opening operation of a railway station is conducted in accordance with company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Opening operation includes but is not limited to briefing by security personnel, unlocking of doors, activating lights, lifts, escalators, computer equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Closing operation of a railway station is conducted in accordance with company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Closing operation includes but is not limited to briefing of security personnel locking of doors, deactivating lights, lifts, escalators, computer equipment.

    Manage a railway station in normal mode.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An inspection of equipment in the area of responsibility is conducted in terms of its serviceability according to company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes but is not limited to lifts, escalators, doors, fare gates, service rooms, facilities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identified defects are reported in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are managed in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Indicators and hazards are responded to in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manage the station in a degraded (abnormal) situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Degraded situations are explained in terms of its impact on customer care and station operations according to company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Degraded situations include but not limited to emergency situations, power failures, fire, robbery, riots, industrial action.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contingency plan activation procedure to rectify a sub-standard condition is explained and demonstrated in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of emergency equipment installed on the station is demonstrated in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A limited practical evacuation exercise is conducted in accordance with company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A limited practical evacuation exercise excludes the physical participation of external role players.
