PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the preparation, conducting and conclusion of Adventure-based Learning activities and experiences in a variety of situations in the outdoor environment. The activity will have to be carried out taking into account the weather and other conditions likely to occur in the operational environment that would have an influence on the activity.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare for an adventure based activity according to operational requirements.
  • Prepare participants for an adventure based activity.
  • Supervise an adventurous experience according to operational requirements.
  • Monitor the safety, enjoyment and achievement of participants.
  • Conclude an adventurous experience.

    An adventure-based activity is designed to meet the aims, and challenge, but not exceed, the participants' adventure challenge levels.

    The location and/or route are researched and equipment is selected for the experience to meet operational requirements.

    External influences and hazards relevant to the experience are identified and eliminated or minimised through risk assessment procedures to ensure safe activity experiences.

    Logistical requirements are identified and complied with according to operational requirements.

    Physical abilities and/or disabilities and the mental/emotional state of participants are reviewed to ensure that the activity is enjoyable, safe and suited to the participants.

    All skills and information required to enjoyably and safely complete the activity are comprehensively and clearly passed on to participants.

    Safety parameters for the experience and the location are fully communicated to participants.

    Progress and status of participants are monitored at pre-selected and ad-hoc stages in the experience to determine if programme objectives are being achieved.

    External factors are monitored to ensure minimal negative impact on the environment whilst maintaining the safe conduct of activities.

    Adjustments to the planned proceedings, including stoppages and/or changes to the level of challenge are made where appropriate.

    Any issues relating to teamwork, participation, discrimination or any other anti-social behaviour are appropriately addressed.

    Participants are supported and assisted to enable the safe conclusion of activities.
