This unit standard is aimed at individuals required to plan and apply basic survival skills within the Adventure Based Learning environment to enable participants to participate safely in a basic level survival experience.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Conduct preparations for a survival experience.
  • Brief and prepare the group participating in a survival experience.
  • Conduct a survival experience.

    Conduct preparations for a survival experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Candidates are screened to determine their suitability for participation in a survival experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Screening includes but is not limited to:
  • Physical condition, previous experience, purpose for participation, medical history and health risks.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The level of endurance and difficulty of a survival experience is determined in order to enable effective planning and the choice of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The survival experience is planned so as to ensure the safety of participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Group gear, ration planning, provisions and equipment, transportation, maps, permits and regulatory requirements, administration.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Brief and prepare the group participating in a survival experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Participants are briefed as to the challenges, which will be encountered to ensure that participants make an informed decision to participate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Facilitator's theoretical knowledge of survival techniques is shared with group as part of preparing them for the experience and their relevant responsibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Logistical arrangements are clarified so as to ensure that all participants are informed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Provisions, equipment, ration planning, gear, transportation, maps, permits, routes, weather conditions, clothing, search and rescue procedures, water management.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Individual tasks are allocated so as to ensure that responsibilities are shared and effectively carried out by participants. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct a survival experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A survival experience is facilitated so as to enable the application of survival techniques according to the pre-determined objectives and survival scale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Survival techniques are employed in the facilitation of the experience in order to transfer survival skills and competencies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Survival experience leaders are monitored and mentored by the facilitator so as to ensure individual safety and security. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Time management is employed to ensure completion of the experience within the allotted time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The experience is evaluated to determine whether objectives were reached. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The group is debriefed and a report compiled for record purposes.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
