PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at individuals who are proficient in the handling of sea kayaks to enable them to conduct recreational/guiding sea-kayak experiences for individuals or groups. Individuals achieving this unit standard will be able to maintain the safety of participants and providing a quality recreational experience.

The learner completing this unit standard will be competent to guide and run a sea kayak experience for recreational trips.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    It is recommended that individuals embarking on this unit standard should be in possession of an open water life-saving qualification/certificate and be in possession of a valid and current first aid certificate so as to enable the addressing of possible emergency situations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to conduct a sea kayaking experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A recreational sea-kayaking experience meeting the skills and competencies of an identified group of participants is planned taking into account Environment factors, weather conditions, hazards and kayaking ability of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources required are identified and put in place in support of a sea-kayaking experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources include but are not limited to:
  • Kayaking equipment, first aid kit, safety equipment, adequate resources as per group size, logistical arrangements such as transportation of equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety requirements are considered and put in place and explained to participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to:
  • Safety equipment to be used, legislative requirements, weather conditions including wind, rain and prevailing sea conditions, minimising of risk, guarding of personal and group safety, communication with participants, navigational equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment checks are carried out to determine suitability of equipment for use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checks include but are not limited to:
  • Buoyancy, sea-worthiness, leaks, and working condition of all tools and equipment, working condition of rudder and paddles, waterproofing, packing, stowing and fastening of equipment. Safety and suitability of equipment.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate sea-kayaking skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Securing techniques for the handling of a sea-kayak are demonstrated to participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes, securing for transportation by road, securing to the bottom, bank or shore.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Boarding and exiting techniques are demonstrated according to the requirements imposed by the launching or landing place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Navigational skills are demonstrated to participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Navigations skills that may be used in various conditions while kayaking, include piloting, steering and controlled paddling, efficient use of paddle strokes, effective use of rudder.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Capsize and rescue procedures are demonstrated in support of the safety of the activity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wet exit following capsize, re-entering, capsize recovery, self rescue, craft and paddle rescue after capsizing, emptying of a flooded kayak with assistance, deep-water re-entry techniques, rescue methods according with standard prescribed and accepted practice for sea kayaking, handling of craft recovery when re-entry is not possible.

    Conduct a sea-kayaking experience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Participants are briefed so as to enable understanding of the rules, conditions and safety requirements of the experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Final equipment inspections and adjustments are concluded in support of individual and group safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Final participant preparation is concluded in preparation for the sea-kayaking experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation includes but is not limited to:
  • Fitting and adjustment of equipment to suit participants and crafts, waterproofed, packed stowed or fastening of equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rescue skills are demonstrated so as to familiarise participants with techniques that fit prevailing conditions and environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Capsizing, emptying of the boat, self and supported rescue.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Guiding and adventure leadership is provided in support of individual and group safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Management of the group, monitoring of individual levels of fatigue and motivation, handling of emergency incidents if so required.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Effective communication is maintained with the group for the duration of the experience so as to support individual and group safety and risk reduction.

    Conclude and review the sea-kayaking experience.

    Post activity routine and non-routine maintenance checks are conducted so as to ensure effective equipment maintenance.

    Includes but is not limited to:
  • Dismantling of equipment, checks for wear, damage, loss and maintenance/replacement requirements, repairs.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment records are completed as per administrative requirements.

    Input from participants is obtained so as to review the effectiveness of the experience and to inform future planning and improvements.
