PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for collating data for grade control and geological modelling purposes.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge required to collate geologically related data for grade control and geological modelling purposes.
  • Source and collate raw data.
  • Validate raw data.
  • Archive the collated data and compile completion reports. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Map reading skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, and proficient in compiling reports in accordance with scientific principles and the use of the appropriate nomenclature.

    Demonstrate the knowledge required to collate geologically related data for grade control and geological modelling purposes.

    The potential and actual implications of inaccurately collated data are described in terms of legal and site-specific requirements.

    The sources of potential data are described in the mining context.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences and requirements of the work instruction and the consequences of non-compliance are explained in terms of the possible and probable impact on the subsequent grade control programme and geological interpretation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different data types are described in terms of the source of each data type, the contents of each data type and the relationship with other data types.

    The sources of data are ascertained, accessed and confirmed to be complete.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The raw data is obtained, confirmed to be complete and organised into the different data types in accordance with sound geological practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Anomalous data are noted and recorded and corrective measures applied within the constraints of the level of responsibility and authority. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include:
  • Incomplete data.
  • Non-sorted/random data.
  • Non-standardised data.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazardous and sub-standard conditions found during examination of the workplace are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Slippery surfaces, electricity in close proximity to water.
  • Poor illumination.
  • Faulty wiring.
  • Excessive dust.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Work related hazards and associated risks that have an effect on a safe and healthy work environment are dealt with in accordance with the laid down procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Eyestrain.
  • Incorrect posture.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The raw data are correctly listed in terms of the data type and relevant fields in the required format and anomalous data, when encountered, are recorded and dealt with in accordance with the laid down procedures and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Data from different sources are integrated into a single data base in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The data are validated in accordance with the work instruction and laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Basic calculations are performed on the data in accordance with the work instruction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Archive the collated data and compile completion reports.

    The collated and validated data are dealt with in accordance with the work instruction and laid down procedure.

  • Stored on site.
  • Transferred to a central or temporary database.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The original data are returned and archived in accordance with the laid down procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The workplace is cleaned in accordance with documented procedure and good housekeeping practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The collated data and required completion reports are submitted in the required format in accordance with laid down procedures.

    The completion of the work is communicated to the relevant personnel in accordance with site-specific requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.

    Note: The effective organisation and sorting of the raw data by data type and within data types and the consequent integration of the will indicate that the learner can organise and manage activities in his/her work environment.     Note: The ability of the learner to obtain/collect and organise actual raw data and to critically evaluate this data for gross errors will enhance him/her proficiency to collect, analyse, organise and evaluate information. The correcting of errors that were detected during the validation process will indicate that the learner can critically evaluate his/her work output prior to submitting the data to other personnel.

    Communicate effectively, using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentations.

    Note: The recording of anomalous raw data received and the outcome of error reports during the validation process and the reporting thereof in the correct format will indicate the learner's efficiency in written presentations. The reporting of hazardous and sub-standard conditions will indicate his/her proficiency in effective oral communication.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

    Note: The correct application of mathematical formulae to accurately analyse the data will indicate that the learner is proficient in the appropriate use of science and technology. The identification of hazardous and sub-standard conditions that can have an effect on the environment and the health of others indicate his/her responsible behaviour in these circumstances.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.

    Note: The ability of the learner to identify anomalous raw data and the correcting thereof and to deal with these conditions by applying problem solving techniques will indicate his/her proficiency in understanding that a specific action or decision taken have more than one effect. The correcting of specific data can effect subsequent calculations and the following of the correct procedure for correcting anomalous data will indicate that the learner understands the relationship between data types.
