PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Animal protection inspectors encounter several welfare concerns relating to wildlife and it is essential to be aware of general needs. Due to the specialized nature and enormous diversity of wildlife, this unit standard focuses on the general needs of wildlife, how they are commonly used and common problem areas.

Learners credited with it will be able to:
  • Explain the general outline of the wildlife industry.
  • Describe the common uses of wildlife.
  • Describe common abuses.

    Different groups of wild animals are identified with reference to those available in South Africa.

    Wildlife is categorized in terms of alien and indigenous animals.

    Relevant legislation providing protection to wildlife is identified and described in terms of the type of protection offered. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Legal and ethical protection is explained in terms of its necessity for different levels.

    Give an overview of the general requirements of wildlife in different facilities.

    Uses of alien animals in the industry are contrasted to the use of indigenous wildlife. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Welfare and husbandry problems are identified relating to alien animals and methods for resolving these problems are identified according to the needs of the animal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Solutions and recommendations for addressing concerns and improving the welfare of these animals are described in a practical manner. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical:
  • Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard. or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.
  • Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.

    Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
