PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and select the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), tools and equipment required to perform the removal and replacement of faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components. Learners will also be able to understand the consequences of not doing the job properly in accordance with manufacturer's and worksite procedures as well as conducting the finalisation procedures.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for the removal and replacement of faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components.
  • Removing and replacing faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components.
  • Finalising the removal and replacement procedure. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The vacuum and/or air brake systems are on locomotives which may include but are not limited to electric motor-coaches, electric locomotives, diesel electric locomotives and diesel hydraulic locomotives.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for the removal and replacement of faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Authorisation to conduct the work is obtained according to worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Authorisation may include but is not limited to signing indemnities, high voltage electrical equipment testing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used in accordance with its intended use and design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    PPE may include but is not limited to goggles, gloves, overalls, boots and ear protection.

    Tools and equipment required are selected in accordance with task requirements.

    Health and safety precautions are adhered to in accordance with worksite requirements.

    Remove and replace faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components.

    Faulty vacuum and/or air brake system components are identified and removed in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Replacement components for vacuum and/or air brake system components are replaced in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Replacements components may include but is not limited to new, rebuilt and refurbished.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Vacuum and/or air brake system components are tested according to manufacturer's specifications to ensure functionality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not removing and replacing vacuum and/or air brake system components correctly are explained in terms of the impact on safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Finalise the removal and replacement procedure.

    Tools and equipment are checked that they are mechanically sound and problems are reported to authorised individuals according to worksite procedures.

    Removed components are processed according to worksite procedures.

    Materials, tools and equipment are stored according to workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Implications of the incorrect storing of materials, tools and equipment are described in terms of their impact on health, safety and production.
